Belts
Does Krav Maga Have a Belt or Ranking System?
Krav Maga uses a belt ranking system, though belts are rarely worn in training. The ranks progress as follows:
- Yellow Belt
- Orange Belt
- Green Belt
- Blue Belt
- Brown Belt
- Black Belt (Dans 1–10)
Krav Maga ranks reflect a student’s knowledge, skill level, and progression through the system. Promotions are earned through testing and evaluation by certified instructors, in accordance with the IKMA (International Krav Maga Association) charter
Promotion Guidelines
- Certified Instructors
Instructors certified through an official program (such as one overseen by a qualified Krav Maga coach in Israel) may test and promote students up to Blue Belt, provided the instructor holds a rank at least two levels higher than the student being tested. For example, a 1st Dan Black Belt can promote up to Blue Belt. - Brown and Black Belt Testing
Promotions to Brown Belt and above require evaluation by a formal testing committee, which must include at least three examiners. - International Testing
For advanced grades awarded outside of Israel, the IKMA’s professional committee may appoint a single qualified examiner to conduct tests abroad.
This ranking structure ensures that progression is based on skill, understanding, and readiness—preserving the integrity of the system at every level.
